When a tree needs to come down, the first question most Valdosta homeowners ask is what it is going to cost. It is a fair question, and the honest answer is that it depends on the tree. Tree Removal Cost by Size
Size is the single biggest driver of price, because a bigger tree means more time, more cutting, more rigging, and more debris. Here is how removals typically break down in South Georgia:
- Small trees ($300 to $700): Anything up to roughly 30 feet. Small pines, crepe myrtles, young hardwoods, and slim ornamentals fall here. These are usually quick, one-crew jobs in an open area.
- Medium trees ($700 to $1,500): Roughly 30 to 60 feet. Mid-size oaks, established pines, sweetgums, and similar. These take more time and often require rigging branches down in sections.
- Large trees ($1,500 to $2,500 and up): Anything over 60 feet, and especially big mature oaks and tall pines with heavy limbs. These are the most involved and often need a bucket truck or crane, careful rigging, and a full crew. Very large or difficult trees can run higher.

What Drives the Price Beyond Size
Two oaks of the exact same height can price very differently depending on where they stand and what is around them. These are the factors that matter most.
Proximity to Structures and Power Lines
A tree in the middle of an open field can often be felled in one piece. A tree hanging over your house, your neighbor's fence, or a power line cannot. It has to be climbed or reached with a bucket truck and taken down piece by piece, with each section rigged and lowered so nothing hits what is below. That careful, controlled work takes far longer and costs more. Trees near power lines are the most sensitive of all, and in some cases the utility has to be involved before work can begin.
Species and Wood Type
Species affects both difficulty and debris volume. A dense hardwood like a live oak or water oak has heavy limbs and a broad, spreading canopy that takes more time to dismantle than a straight pine of the same height. Pines come down more predictably but are tall and produce a lot of material. The heavier and more sprawling the tree, the more the removal runs.
Access
If the crew and equipment can pull right up to the tree, the job goes faster. If the tree is in a fenced back yard, behind a house, or in a spot a bucket truck cannot reach, the crew has to climb it and carry every piece out by hand. Poor access is one of the biggest hidden cost factors, and it is a big reason a site walk beats an over-the-phone guess.
Condition of the Tree
A dead, hollow, or storm-damaged tree can actually be more dangerous and more expensive to remove than a healthy one. Compromised wood is unpredictable. It cannot be climbed safely, and it can fail in unexpected ways during the removal, so it often requires a crane or bucket truck and extra caution.
Stump Grinding Add-On
Most tree removal quotes cover taking the tree down and hauling off the trunk and limbs. The stump is usually a separate line item, because it takes a different machine. Stump grinding in our area typically runs $100 to $500 per stump depending on the diameter and how accessible it is.
A small stump in an open yard is at the low end. A large-diameter oak stump with surface roots that also need grinding sits at the high end. If you are having several trees removed at once, most companies, including ours, offer a better per-stump rate for grinding them all in the same visit, because the machine is already on site.
Grinding takes the stump down six to twelve inches below grade so you can seed, sod, or mulch over it. Debris Haul-Off
What happens to the wood and brush affects the price too. Most of our removals include haul-off, and because we own our equipment and self-perform the work, we handle the debris ourselves rather than subbing it out. If you want to keep the wood for firewood or have the chips left on site for mulch, let us know when we quote. Keeping material on site can sometimes bring the number down.
Emergency and Storm Removal Costs More
South Georgia gets hit by thunderstorms, tropical systems, and the occasional tornado, and storm-damaged trees are a different kind of job. When a tree is down on a house, split at the trunk, or hung up in another tree, the removal is more complex and more dangerous, and emergency response after hours or during a weather event carries a premium over a scheduled removal.
A tree tangled in power lines, resting on a roof, or partially uprooted has stored tension in it that has to be released carefully. That work is slower and riskier, which is why storm removals price above routine ones. If you are dealing with immediate danger, that safety and speed is worth it, but for a healthy tree you simply want gone, scheduling it in normal conditions is always the cheaper route.
