What Goes Into a Pond That Holds Water
A good pond is not just a hole in the ground. Whether it holds water comes down to your soil. Ponds seal because there is enough clay in the ground to hold the water in, and a lot of the sandy soil around South Georgia and North Florida does not have it. Before we dig, we look at what is in your ground and tell you honestly whether it will seal on its own or whether you need help getting there.
When the native soil will not hold, the answer is usually a compacted clay core or a liner. We build the embankment in lifts and compact each one so the dam actually holds back water instead of seeping through or slumping over time. That embankment work is where a lot of cheap ponds go wrong, and it is the part we do not cut corners on. We would rather give you an honest assessment up front than build you a basin that never fills.
Farm Ponds vs. Engineered Detention & Retention Basins
A farm or recreational pond is built around how you want to use the land. You tell us you want water for fishing, livestock, or irrigation, and we excavate to a design shape, build the embankment, and grade the banks to match. There is real craft to it, but the plan is driven by what works for your property.
A detention or retention basin on a construction site is a different animal. That earthwork is engineered, and the contours, storage volume, spillways, and outlet structures come off an approved plan. Our job there is to build the basin to those contours and coordinate the outlet structures and any testing the spec calls for. We rough grade and coordinate with your surveyor, engineer, and geotech: the geotech certifies, and we build to spec. We do the site prep and earthwork, not the engineering or the certification, and a general contractor will always verify that division of work up front.
Moving Water the Right Way Across Your Site
Ponds are only half of it. A lot of the calls we get are about water going where it should not, standing in a field, running toward a building, or washing out a driveway. We grade for positive drainage, cut swales and ditches, and set culverts to route water away from the places it causes problems. We file Georgia 811 utility locates before we dig, and we coordinate the engineered outlet structures where a plan requires them.
